The North Wind and the Sun

Translation of Aesop’s fable from the Handbook of the IPA (1999).

1. audio The North Wind and the Sun were disputing which was the stronger
2. audio when a traveller came along wrapped in a warm cloak.
3. audio They agreed that the one who first succeeded in making the traveller take his cloak off should be considered stronger than the other.
4. audio Then the North Wind blew as hard as he could,
5. audio but the more he blew the more closely did the traveller fold his cloak around him,
6. audio and at last the North Wind gave up the attempt.
7. audio Then the Sun shone out warmly,
8. audio and immediately the traveller took off his cloak.
9. audio And so the North Wind was obliged to confess that the Sun was the stronger of the two.
