Reading Assignment

The reading assignment is a 1500 word literature review including critical analysis of the topic selected for the tutorial presentation. This assessment task addresses learning objectives 1, 2, 5, 6 and generic skills 2, 3.

Topics include but are not restricted to:

  • Accent and Social Features, e.g. gender, age, class, education
  • Early Australian accent
  • Elocution
  • American Influence
  • Attitudes
  • Ethnicity
  • Colloquialisms, slang, idiom
  • Advertising, Media, Pop Culture
  • Sound change
  • Australian Vernacular English
  • Myths and Misconceptions

Each assignment addresses a particular aspect of Australian English through a critical review of the literature. Some readings will be suggested but students are encouraged to seek out their own resources.

Evaluation will be based on a rubric which can be found here and assesses the following criteria:

  • discussion of relevance of the topic to linguistic study
  • review of major sources: what work has been done and how?
  • critical evaluation of the literature
  • discussion of how study in this area could be extended
  • flow of argument
  • appropriate referencing
