Tutorial Presentation

The tutorial presentation is an individual presentation to the class on a set topic. Each presentation is expected to be about 15 minutes in duration: 10 minutes for the talk and 5 minutes for questions. Creativity is encouraged. This task is the in-class presentation of the reading assignment.

Topics include:

  • Accent and Social Features, e.g. gender, age, class, education
  • Early Australian accent
  • Elocution
  • American Influence
  • Attitudes
  • Ethnicity
  • Colloquialisms, slang, idiom
  • Advertising, Media, Pop Culture
  • Sound change
  • Australian Vernacular English
  • Myths and Misconceptions

Some readings will be suggested but students are encouraged to seek out their own resources.

This assessment task addresses learning objectives 1, 2, 5, 6 and generic skills 2, 3, 6.

Evaluation will be based on lecturer and peer assessment. A peer assessment rubric is available here and is used to assess the quality of:

  • preparedness and organisation
  • presentation skills and ability to engage the class
  • knowledge of the topic
  • innovation
  • ability to generate discussion and respond to the audience.
